The Data Storytelling Fellowship (DSF) is a specialized Baraza Media Lab program designed to help African storytellers, journalists, and content creators leverage data to develop compelling stories. We’ve had 2 successful editions so far supporting over 30 Fellows in crafting powerful narratives that blend data with human experience, and now, Cycle 3 is here with even more ambition, reach, and depth.
Baraza Media Lab Partners with MOVE Africa to Amplify Migration Narratives Through Data Storytelling Fellowship.
Across Africa, storytellers are rethinking how we tell stories on migration using data, empathy, and bold creativity. In its third cycle, the Data Storytelling Fellowship under MOVE Africa, an African Union project, supported by GIZ, enters a new chapter—one where story development meets real-time documentation. This phase spotlights the 20 selected fellows across Africa who are using multimedia, data, and deep reporting to explore migration, climate, health, governance, gender justice, and more.
About the Fellowship
Migration is a story of resilience, opportunity, and diversity. But telling these stories requires more than passion. It demands skill, data, and the right platform. That’s where the Data Storytelling Fellowship comes in. This year, we are pleased to partner with MOVE Africa, an African Union project, supported by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) to expand our reach and empower storytellers across Africa to craft compelling, evidence-based migration narratives.
In this second phase, 20 selected Fellows are diving deep: gathering data, challenging assumptions, and shaping narratives that reflect the complexity of migration across Africa. The third cycle of the Data Storytelling Fellowship is now live, and the work is underway.
Meet the 2025 Fellows
From Accra all the way to Nairobi, this year’s cohort is sharp, curious, and ready to dig deep. Each Fellow brings a unique lens to how migration is understood — not just as a crisis, but as a movement rooted in love, labor, family, and choice.
Soon, we’ll be sharing open-access data storytelling resources, case studies, and published works by our fellows.
