The Complicated Role of Influencers in the 2024/2025 Civic Movement

Kenyan creators have been doing more than entertaining. They have been narrating public life in real time, making judgement calls under pressure from audiences, partners and the pace of the feed.
This Baraza Media Lab study traces how creators showed up when timelines were tense, what people asked for, and what it cost. It combines clear numbers with first-hand accounts: 76% of creators expressed support, 54% reported income loss as campaigns shifted, 84% of audiences expected a clear voice.

Participation took different shapes: visible narration, measured commentary, deliberate quiet. Trust held when posts carried verified information, simple actions and humour used with care.

Inside you will find participation patterns, audience expectations, low-lift habits that protect accuracy and wellbeing and practical notes for creators, partners and community spaces.
