Africa Media Festival

Africa Media Festival is a pan-African gathering for media and creative sectors. Convened annually by Baraza Media Lab, AMF was created to hold space for honest reflection on how media is practiced, funded , challenged, and sustained on the continent. A space for new ideas, fresh perspectives and meaningful connections.

Over the last three years, Africa Media Festival has brought together over 1,200 participants from more than 20 countries across the continent. The festival has hosted over 100 speakers and facilitators—ranging from investigative journalists and filmmakers to researchers, technologists, and funders—offering sessions that span practice, policy, and community. It has become a trusted platform for candid dialogue, cross-sector exchange, and shared learning across the media and creative fields in Africa.

The 2025 Edition

Africa Media Festival 2025

The third edition of the Africa Media Festival took place in Nairobi on February 26–27, 2025. For two days, over 500 people came together to reflect on the realities of creating, sustaining, and challenging media work on the continent. From rapid-fire talks and hands-on demos to working sessions and long-form conversations, the format echoed the energy of the people in the room: sharp, unfinished, and rooted in lived experience.

This year’s edition focused less on introducing new topics and more on sitting with the ones that keep resurfacing—questions of ownership, language, safety, power, access, and accountability. We looked at what AI is doing to our workflows and what funders are asking of us. We spoke about care in investigative work, and the politics of representation in local and international storytelling.

Those who showed up brought more than insights. They carried doubt, memory, and years of work done quietly and without recognition. The festival didn’t offer resolutions. Instead, it held space for discomfort, clarity, and context—and reminded us that progress often looks like people choosing to stay in the conversation, even when it’s hard.
