Applications are now open for the third cycle of Baraza Media Lab’s Data Storytelling Fellowship!

Migration is a story of resilience, opportunity, and diversity. But telling these stories requires more than passion. It demands skill, data, and the right platform. That’s where the Data Storytelling Fellowship comes in. This year, through the MOVE Africa project by African Union, we are pleased to partner with Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) to reach a broader community of African storytellers.

What is the Data Storytelling Fellowship (DSF)?

The DSF is a specialized program designed to help African storytellers, journalists, and content creators leverage data to develop compelling stories. This third cycle of the fellowship will focus on training storytellers to tell better migration stories, in partnership with MOVE Africa by the African Union and Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) to reach a broader community of African storytellers.

This third cycle expands its scope by partnering with MOVE Africa and GIZ, enabling a continent-wide reach. In addition, more resources and mentorship opportunities are available to ensure participants can produce content that resonates with African audiences.

How long does the fellowship last, and what is the structure?

The program runs over several weeks, beginning with introductory workshops, followed by intensive sessions, mentorship, and a capstone project. Specific dates and timelines will be shared once the application window closes.

Is the fellowship delivered online, in person, or both?

The majority of sessions will be conducted virtually to ensure broad participation across Africa.

Do I need prior experience with data journalism or migration reporting?

While background knowledge is helpful, it’s not mandatory. The program is designed to cater to varying levels of expertise, from beginners in data storytelling to seasoned professionals looking to refine their skills.

What is the application process?

  • Step 2: Upload relevant work samples (if available) to demonstrate your storytelling approach.

Is there a fee to participate?

The Data Storytelling Fellowship does not require an application or participation fee. Applicants only need to demonstrate a commitment to crafting credible, people-centered migration stories.

How will Fellows be selected?

A review committee will evaluate applications based on creativity, clarity of purpose, demonstrated interest in migration reporting, and potential impact on African audiences.

How will Fellows be selected?

Yes. Participants who successfully complete all requirements will receive a certificate of completion and will also have the opportunity to showcase their work across relevant channels.
